SURREY V WORCESTERSHIRE at the Kia Oval (Royal London One-Day Cup), 4 AUGUST 2015

If the Rapids arrive at the Oval tomorrow still reeling from yesterday's astonishing 21-run defeat to Northants, Surrey could potentially seal a place in the last eight with two group fixtures to spare. Worcestershire are yet to get off the mark in this season's Royal London One-Day Cup. They will not be presented with a better chance than against the Steelbacks on Sunday; after Joe Leach took wickets with the first three balls of the match before Northants inched along to 19 for six.

Worcestershire simply haven't fired with the bat in the RLODC. Only Ross Whiteley is averaging over thirty with the willow. Skipper Daryl Mitchell sits second in his side's Royal London batting averages, but with a strike rate of just 51.78. The only other crumb of comfort has been 19-year-old Ed Barnard's 51 against Somerset at Taunton, where the Rapids fell 56 runs short.

With the ball, Saeed Ajmal has kept things tight with his re-modelled off-breaks, but without taking sufficient wickets. The pick has arguably been Barnard, with seven wickets at 21.85 runs apiece in his three outings in one-day cricket, rather than Jack Shantry, who, of course, has happy memories of playing against Surrey. Shantry has chipped in with four scalps at an average of 24.75 thus far.

Steven Davies is 95 runs away from 5,000 List A career notches. Given the form Davies is in, you would have to back him to get to the milestone tomorrow. Jason Roy (1,948 runs) has 2,000 in his sights. Only one member of Worcestershire's likely starting eleven has made over 600 List A career runs - Daryl Mitchell, who has 2,491 at an average of 33.21.

The announcement of just a 12-man squad sees Tim Linley drop out of the reckoning. Against Derbyshire, on Sunday, Rory Burns came in for Ben Foakes, which was a bit of a surprise. Why alter a winning formula? Who knows, perhaps, Foakes picked up a knock at Durham.

Surrey are the red hot favourites and not even I can contrive a justification for saying that Worcestershire will break their duck in this year's RLODC tomorrow.
