William Hill Sports
SURREY V YORKSHIRE at the Kia Oval (LVCC1), 24-27 SEPTEMBER 2013

The final game of the season sees relegated Surrey entertain Yorkshire, who, for much of the summer have challenged for the title after winning promotion twelve months ago; which will serve as encouragement to Lancashire and Northants, who will be taking their place in Division One next year at Surrey's expense and, one suspects, Derbyshire also.

The Tykes have shrugged off the absence of Bairstow, Bresnan and Root, to international calls. Andrew Gale has made 1,025 championship runs at an average of 46.59, while Gary Ballance (995 runs at 52.36) has come to the fore to such an extent that he has snuck into the England squad for this winter's Ashes. Phil Jaques has also scored runs at important times and Yorkshire have benefited from Adil Rashid's ability to marshal the tail.

With the ball, Ryan Sidebottom (47 championship wickets at 19.70 runs apiece) and new recruit Jack Brooks (34 at 22.76) have been reinvigorated while Steven Patterson has continued to be one of the most under-rated fast bowlers in county cricket. Had Yorkshire possessed a top flight spinner perhaps they would still be pushing for the title, but Rashid's leg spin has rarely looked threatening.

To follow.

Surrey have rung the changes for this match. Matthew Dunn and Tom Jewell have been drafted in and, if they play, both will be making their first championship appearances of the season. Meanwhile, with the bat, Jason Roy could be on the verge of returning to first team action while Dominic Sibley looks set to continue at the top of the order.

With no hope of avoiding relegation, Surrey will probably err on the side of serving up a pitch that rewards bat and ball alike, but that may not be enough to hold back Yorkshire who will fancy their chances of taking a youthful-looking Surrey line-up to the cleaners to finish their 2013 campaign on a high.
