SURREY V YORKSHIRE at the Kia Oval (RCC)
2-5 SEPTEMBER 2026

Eighth play host to seventh in Division One in what could prove to be a pivotal game for both teams in terms of staving off the threat of relegation.

While it could be argued that the loss of day three at Chelmsford and Ben Foakes' second championship hundred of the season denied Essex in the last round, an encouraging second dig on Surrey's part might have been sufficient to turn the contest on its head.

Since trouncing Surrey by an innings at Headingley, Yorkshire have drawn with Warwickshire, lost away to Leicestershire, beaten Hampshire and, last weekend, been frustrated by the weather in the re-match with the Foxes at Scarborough.

The Yorkies have enjoyed greater consistency with the ball rather than the bat this summer. George Hill will go into this clash with 33 championship wickets at 21.45 runs apiece, while Jack White has taken 23 at 26.91 and off-spinner Dom Bess 27 at 32.74. Even though Ben Coad's form and contributions have been somewhat stop start this term, due to a side strain, he remains a seamer who commands respect.

Only Joe Root (59.25), Hill (509 red-ball runs at an average of 33.93), Will Luxton (31.50) and skipper Jonny Bairstow (30.15) are currently averaging over thirty for Yorkshire in the Champo. But the Tykes aren't short of batters capable of putting runs on the board - Adam Lyth, for example. But other than Lyth's 141 against Surrey in May, the former England opener has really struggled.

Ollie Pope has an excellent record against Yorkshire. His four first-class innings versus the Tykes read: 0, 158 not out, 69 not out and 136. Meanwhile, Ben Foakes averages 57.41 against them. Tom Lawes (15 f-c wickets at 16.40) also seems to relish playing the Yorkies.

Surrey v Yorkshire - First-Class Records Sheet

If he plays, Auquib Nabi will be making his Surrey debut. Nabi will start with 999 first-class career runs, while Tom Lawes has 905. For Yorkshire, 19-year-old batter Will Bennison could be in line for a first-class debut while Indian slow left-armer Kuldeep Yadav will almost certainly make his debut for the visitors.

Jordan Clark remains sidelined with an Achilles injury, so Surrey have signed 29-year-old Indian seamer Auquib Nabi, whose record in first-class cricket reads 162 wickets at an average of 18.63. Also missing from the South Londoners' line-up are Sam Curran (groin), Will Jacks (appendicitis) and Ryan Patel (hand); while Gus Atkinson, Dan Lawrence and Jamie Smith are in the England squad for next week's Third Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston.

OPPONENT DATE VENUE RESULT
Essex 27-30 Aug 2026 Chelmsford Match Drawn
Nottinghamshire 20-22 Aug 2026 The Oval Lost By 145 Runs
Glamorgan 19-22 Jun 2026 Cardiff Lost By 7 Wickets
Hampshire 7-10 Jun 2026 The Oval Match Drawn
Yorkshire 15-18 May 2026 Headingley Lost By An Inns & 127 Runs

Surrey haven't lost to Yorkshire at the Oval in red-ball cricket since 2007, indeed each of the last three head-to-heads in SE11 have seen the Oval outfit win convincingly. Cloudy but dry seems to sum up the weather forecast for the next four days. Defeat for either side could well be calamitous, so now, more than at any time this summer, it's all about being brave and backing your skills. Prediction - a much needed Surrey victory; although I doubt I'd be saying that but for Ben Foakes' heroic 120 not out a few days ago!

A.Lyth, W.Luxton, S.Whiteman, J.Wharton, M.Revis, J.Bairstow (capt, wk), G.Hill, K.Yadav, D.Bess, B.Coad and J.White.

David Millns and Rob White.
