William Hill Sports
SUSSEX V SURREY at Arundel (LVCC1), 12-15 JUNE 2013

Surrey travel to Arundel desperately needing a win against table-toppers Sussex to kick-start their 2013 campaign.

Luke Wright's return from the IPL has seen Rory Hamilton-Brown discarded, and Wright has repaid the faith shown in him by racing to the top of Sussex's championship batting averages (thanks mainly to a magnificent 187 at Lord's last week). Meanwhile, Luke Wells (471 championship runs at an average of 52.33) has kicked on from his double century against Surrey at the Oval. Indeed, Wells is currently the Martlets leading run-maker, just ahead of skipper Ed Joyce, who is averaging 64.85.

Sussex have also taken the brave decision to drop Monty Panesar, in favour of 24-year-old leg-spinner Will Beer, although it helps when you have a trio of seamers in red hot form. Overseas player Steve Magoffin has captured his 36 championship scalps at a cost of just 15.08, while Chris Jordan - with 34 at 22.00 runs apiece - has flourished in his new surroundings. The third musketeer, James Anyon was conspicous by his absence last week, when rested for the Martlets' clash with Middlesex.

Surrey's Arun Harinath has 1,920 first-class career runs, while, for Sussex, Ben Brown starts tomorrow's contest with 1,997.

Stuart Meaker is the most notable absentee from the Surrey squad announced today. Meaker, who has a knee problem, joins Gareth Batty (side strain) on the treatment table. On a positive note, Zafar Ansari is poised to make his first appearance in this season's County Championship; replacing Jason Roy, who has made just 49 runs at an average of 8.16 with the bat this summer.

Surrey have won just once in ten championship meetings with Sussex, but, more significantly, the weather forecast for the next couple of days is disappointing. That said, Arundel generally produces a positive outcome one way or the other, favouring the side that fields first and teams possessing a front-line spinner. Notwithstanding this, my head says: "Draw".

C Nash, L Wells, M Yardy, E Joyce (capt), M Prior, L Wright, B Brown (wk), C Jordan, W Beer, S Magoffin and C Liddle.
