SUSSEX SHARKS V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Hove (FPT), 8 MAY 2008

By my reckoning the loser of this match would need to win all four of their remaining fixtures in the South East Division just to stand a chance of finishing in the top two and progressing to the Friends Provident Trophy quarter-finals. So, it's make or break time.

Sussex have strengthened their bowling with the acquisition of the 30-year-old West Indies seamer Corey Collymore, whom, they argue, has been brought in to replace Ryan Harris. But no one is overlooking the fact that the Sharks' talisman, Mushtaq Ahmed, is currently out of action. Surrey, one feels, just need to decide what their best batting line-up is and be more specific about what each bowler's role should be.

One look at Sussex's averages for this year's competition highlights their fallibility with the ball. Only Michael Yardy is currently conceding less than four and a half runs per over. Furthermore, their leading wicket-taker, James Kirtley, is averaging 31.00. So, even if it wasn't because the game is being played under floodlights, if the Brown Caps win the toss they simply have to bat first. The good news is that they have lost their last two tosses in the FPT.

Apart from Chris Nash and Luke Wright, all of Sharks' batsmen have either made a fifty or a hundred, or scored their runs quickly in the Friends Provident. Skipper, Chris Adams currently averages 75.00, while Matt Prior occupies second place in the batting analysis with an average of 53.33. Of those who are still playing county cricket, no one has scored more runs against Surrey in List A one-day cricket than Adams (721 runs at an average of 45.06). In addition, Goodwin and Yardy both average over 44.00 against the Oval outfit.
