SUSSEX SHARKS V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Hove (FPT), 10 MAY 2009

Almost a year to the day, Surrey return to the scene of perhaps their most convincing victory in 2008, when Usman Afzaal's maiden one-day century for the Brown Caps proved too much for the Sharks, who fell 67 runs short thanks to Afzaal's 2-42 with the ball after the visitors lost Chris Schofield to a broken thumb.

For Sussex, in this year's Friends Provident Trophy the bowling of Damien Wright, who has been filling in for overseas signing Yasir Arafat, and the leg-spin of 20-year-old Will Beer have been difficult for opponents to get away. But generally speaking the Sharks' attack has looked a little toothless. That will no doubt change with the arrival of Arafat, who is expected to have his first outing of the new season at Hove tomorrow.

With the bat, it would appear that only Ed Joyce - 136 in three innings so far - and the Sussex skipper Michael Yardy pose any real threat. But, Luke Wright is always a dangerous customer, Murray Goodwin's recent List A record against Surrey reads 110*, 3, 44, 26, 89. 86 and 38, and in the pre-season ProArch Trophy Joe Gatting made a hundred against the Brown Caps.

For the home side, James Kirtley goes into tomorrow's contest with 346 List A career wickets.

Surrey will take the eleven that beat Yorkshire at Headingley to Hove tomorrow, Stuart Meaker is on standby in case Andre Nel's hamstring pull fails to respond to treatment.

In the last couple of years the Brown Caps have tended to do well against the Sharks in both List A and Twenty20 cricket, and their visits to Hove have generally benefited Surrey. But both sides are in the process of rebuilding and, therefore, are short on confidence. Whoever makes the best start stands an extremely good chance of winning. Don't ask me why, but I've got a feeling the Arafat factor will clinch it for the hosts.

E Joyce, J Gatting, L Wright, M Goodwin, B Brown (wk), M Yardy (capt), R Hamilton-Brown, R Martin-Jenkins, Yasir Arafat, W Beer and J Kirtley.

Nigel Cowley and John Holder.
