WARWICKSHIRE V SURREY at Edgbaston (FCC1), 10-13 SEPTEMBER 2005

If it doesn't rain it pours! Surrey were supposed to be welcoming back Jimmy Ormond tomorrow, after losing the 28-year-old seamer's services at the end of July when he broke his hand following the loss to Kent at Guildford. But in the last couple of days Ormond has picked up a hamstring injury bowling in the nets and looks as if he could be ruled out of what remains of the Ovalites' frustrating season.

It was hardly the news Surrey needed after watching Middlesex rack up maximum bonus points in their game against Kent at Lord's, not to mention a gathering weather forecast for the next week in Birmingham that would only have Gene Kelly looking forward to a splash!

Just about the only positive for the visitors to hold on to is that Warwickshire's campaign has taken a sudden downturn in the last week or so, thus ending any hopes they had of picking up some silverware this summer.

Looking at their batting there is a danger that the Bears will finish the season without a 1,000-run-maker in the County Championship. Leader of the pack, however, is Nick Knight (876 runs at an average of 38.08) closely followed by Jonathan Trott, whose 210 in the first innings against Sussex proved to be the match-winning performance last time Warwickshire were at home.

With the ball, old workhorse Dougie Brown has, again, sent down more than 400 overs this term, and is currently Warwickshire's leading wicket-taker with 42 victims at an average of 30.14 runs apiece. On a par has been Makhaya Ntini, who has captured 20 wickets in just five championship outings. The left-arm seam of Neil Carter and Alex Loudon's twirlers have played their part from time to time, but, as yet, neither has looked like running through sides, which is why mid-table obscurity beckons for the Bears.

The degree to which the Edgbaston pitch deteriorated in the recent match against Sussex would suggest that it is imperative to win the toss and bat first. But the weather looks set to have the greatest say in the outcome, which my head (rather than my heart) tells me will be a draw.

In case it has slipped your notice Martin Bicknell (Achilles tendon) is definitely out for the rest of the summer, and it now looks as if Jimmy Ormond (hamstring) will not be seen again either. There is no official news on Graham Thorpe's back injury, so one has to assume that it is still affecting him, since he is another absentee. On a slightly more positive note at least Ormond's new injury means that (the rumoured to be unhappy) Tim Murtagh will continue to be a regular fixture in the Surrey first team. Jade Dernbach and Rikki Clarke are added to the eleven that drew with Hampshire for the Ovalites to arrive at a13-man squad.

N Knight (capt), I Westwood, J Trott, J Troughton, A Loudon, M Powell, T Frost (wk), D Brown, N Carter, N Tahir and M Ntini.
