WORCESTERSHIRE ROYALS V SURREY BROWN CAPS at Worcester (Pro 40 League 2), 16 SEPTEMBER 2006

With showers forecast for Taunton on Sunday, this match takes on something of a cup final air. The winner will be certain to finish in the top three of Division Two, if not certain of promotion to Division One of the Pro40 League; which has been a far more popular, indeed meaningful competition than a lot of pundits were predicting back in July.

Unfortunately for Surrey both Kabir Ali and Matt Mason are now fit again for Worcestershire, and with Zaheer Khan (14 wickets at 10.64 runs apiece in this summer's Pro40 League), Gareth Batty and Ray Price completing the Royals attack, one suspects that the visitors will have a job making a decent total tomorrow.

With the bat the Brown Caps, who will be without an overseas player, will not be pleased to learn that a New Zealander, Lou Vincent (329 runs at an average of 54.83 in the Pro40) is in supreme form with the bat right for the Royals. Mark Butcher's men will therefore be hoping that Vincent does not repeat what fellow countryman Hamish Marshall did to them on Tuesday.

Jonathan Batty is 18 away from 2,000 List A career runs and Nayan Doshi has 48 List A wickets. For Worcestershire, Ben Smith will be making his 350th appearance in List A one-day cricket.

Ian Salisbury is still sidelined with an injured knee, as for Azhar Mahmood's we'll have to wait and see. Rikki Clarke has been cleared to play the England management despite being named in the ICC Champions Trophy squad, which sets off for India in a few weeks time.

Leicestershire 6 Aug 2006 NL Won By 33 Runs The Oval 275-7 (40) 242 (36)
Derbyshire 30 Jul 2006 NL Won By 8 Wickets Chesterfield 211-2 (27.2) 207 (39.4)

The last four results between these sides at New Road have seen the game go to the side batting second, so it may turn out to be a good toss to lose. Other than that, this fixture's recent history tells us little. Without Azhar Mahmood I have a feeling that Surrey will struggle. Providing they don't get trounced, a narrow defeat might not scupper the Brown Caps' chances of promotion totally, so my money is on them playing host to the seventh placed team in Div One on Sunday week.
